<! - Google_ad_section_start ->
<! - Publish_helper name = riginal text p_id = 52 _id = d_id = 25046 _id = 5 ->
Do you remember all those years when scientists argued that smoking would kill us but the doubters insisted that we didn know for sure? That the evidence was inconclusive, the science uncertain? That the antismoking lobby was out to destroy our way of life and the government should stay out of the way? Lots of Americans bought that nonsense, and over three decades, some 10 million smokers went to early graves.
There are upsetting parallels today, as scientists in one wave after another try to awaken us to the growing threat of global warming. The latest was a panel from the National Academy of Sciences, enlisted by the White House , to tell us that the Earth atmosphere is definitely warming and that the problem is largely man-made. The clear message is that we should get moving to protest ourselves. The president of the National Academy, Bruce Alberts, added this key point in the preface to the panel report: “Science never has all the answers.” But science does provide us with the best available guide to the future, and it is critical that our nation and the world base important policies on the best judgments that science can provide concerning the future consequences of present actions.
Just as on smoking, voices now come from many quarters insisting that the science about global warming is incomplete, that it OK to keep pouring fumes into the air until we know for sure. This is a dangerous game : by the time 100 percent of the evidence is in, it may be too late. With the risks obvious and growing, a prudent people would take out an insurance policy now.
Fortunately, the White House is starting to pay attention. But it obvious that a majority of the president advisers still don take global warming seriously. Instead of a plan of action, they continue to press for more research-a classic case of “paralysis by analysis.”
To serve as responsible stewards of the planet, we must press forward on deeper atmospheric and oceanic research. But research alone is inadequate. If the Administration won take the legislative initiative, Congress should help to begin fashioning conservation measures. A bill by Democratic Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, which would offer financial incentives for private industry, is a promising start. Many see that the country is getting ready to build lots of new power plants to meet our energy needs. If we are ever going to protect the atmosphere, it is crucial that those new plants be environmentally sound.
26. In the first paragraph, the author mentions the “smoking decades ago neglected to bring serious consequences; such neglect occurred in the issue of global warming, I hope the Government can draw lessons from, lessons learned. [A] option is unsuitable because it only pointed to the fact, but have not been able to point out that the intention to contact the author of both. [C] option to the deterioration of the consequences of smoking to global warming, is clearly wrong. [D] option both of which have been deteriorating, apparently did not reflect the author intentions. That whispered message, half invitation and half forcing, is what most of us think of when we hear the words peer pressure. It usually leads to no good-drinking, drugs and casual sex. But in her new book Join the Club, Tina Rosenberg contends that peer pressure can also be a positive force through what she calls the social cure, in which organizations and officials use the power of group dynamics to help individuals improve their lives and possibly the word.
Rosenberg, the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize, offers a host of example of the social cure in action: In South Carolina, a state-sponsored antismoking program called Rage Against the Haze sets out to make cigarettes uncool . In South Africa, an HIV-prevention initiative known as LoveLife recruits young people to promote safe sex among their peers.
The idea seems promising, and Rosenberg is a perceptive observer. Her critique of the lameness of many pubic-health campaigns is spot-on: they fail to mobilize peer pressure for healthy habits, and they demonstrate a seriously flawed understanding of psychology. “Dare to be different, please don smoke!” Pleads one billboard campaign aimed at reducing smoking among teenagers-teenagers, who desire nothing more than fitting in. Rosenberg argues convincingly that public-health advocates ought to take a page from advertisers, so skilled at applying peer pressure.
But on the general effectiveness of the social cure, Rosenberg is less persuasive. Join the Club is filled with too much irrelevant detail and not enough exploration of the social and biological factors that make peer pressure so powerful. The most glaring flaw of the social cure as it presented here is that it doesn work very well for very long. Rage Against the Haze failed once state funding was cut. Evidence that the LoveLife program produces lasting changes is limited and mixed.
There no doubt that our peer groups exert enormous influence on our behavior. An emerging body of research shows that positive health habits-as well as negative ones-spread through networks of friends via social communication. This is a subtle form of peer pressure: we unconsciously imitate the behavior we see every day.
Far less certain, however, is how successfully experts and bureaucrats can select our peer groups and steer their activities in virtuous directions. It like the teacher who breaks up the troublemakers in the back row by pairing them with better-behaved classmates. The tactic never really works. And that the problem with a social cure engineered from the outside: in the real world, as in school, we insist on choosing our own friends.
21.

October 28, 2010
As people became more apprehensive about the effects of nicotine on the the body of the smoker, many research studies were conducted to verify the truth Some people believed that nicotine was actually a deleterious element. Others were of the conviction that nicotine was an abusive substance contained in tobacco smoke and inventory software management system, it was the key to making people compulsive the users of tobacco. The verbal verbal of these theories had great implications in the understanding and treatment of diseases caused by smoking apart from the preparation of government policies. The policies were related to questions that arose among the public, for instance, whether the government needs to support the use of tobacco and the industry as it does for other industries like agriculture, or whether it should impose regulations on tobacco.
Although these are found to be very sensitive issues, they have not been deliberated much in parliaments in different parts of the world. But, as an exception, in the United States, the issue has been tabled in both the Houses. Some people attributed the high incidence of cancer and related diseases found in cigarette smokers to personality traits and genetics. The tobacco lobby made its argument that any regulation imposed on smoking would amount to an infringement on the free will of its people to engage in voluntary Putian Trade Website pleasurable activities. On the contrary, The National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Public Health section in the country stated that cigarette smoking constituted a clear instance of drug abuse. Their representatives were of the view that cigarette smoking done for pleasure can be called a compulsively driven behaviour.
It is a known fact that non-nutritive plants and their products are not consumed on a large scale unless they contain certain drugs that can affect the way people act, think and feel. These substances, when used abusively, get into the blood of the user and ultimately affect the brain. The highly potent substance extracted, by the name of morphine, is made by reducing and refining opium poppies. When processed further, the result is a substance called heroin. Similarly, cocaine is extracted from coco leaves and undergoes various processes in order to maximize its soothing effects. Nicotine affects the brain even more promptly when inhaled in the form of tobacco smoke than when administered through the veins. It also gets, absorbed very fast Soap Hunks In The The Summertime through the thin membranes of one holmium 檚 mouth as well as the nose. Hence, it gets into the body very effectively when consumed in the form of other products of tobacco like chewing tobacco and snuff.
Patterns of use of these drugs are found to be uniform among people. As with drugs like heroin, the initial build up of tolerance levels results in its increased usage levels. When a particular level is reached, the intake quantity will remain stable for long periods. But, unavailability or abstinence for even shorter periods can result in uneasiness, discomfort and an increased longing to take the substance. In addition to that, patterns of relapse also were found to be similar for similar drugs and, this is attributed to the biological factors playing their part.

November 17, 2010
Delegates from around the

November 17, 2010
Delegates from around the world are meeting this week in Uruguay to consider new ways to control tobacco.A World Health Organization treaty called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control took effect five years ago , More than one hundred and seventy governments have signed it.The treaty requires a number of efforts-like raising tobacco prices, restricting advertising and banning sales to children. These high school students recently pretested against tobacco companies at a trade show in Jakarta.Indonesia has not signed the international treaty. But its Health Ministry proposed to ban all forms of cigarette advertising. An official at the Indonesia Tobacco Alliances says his trade group agrees with banning all activities to promote cigarette to the young. But he says tobacco companies should be able to market their products to adults, just like any other legal product.Tobacco growers are also concerned about several measures proposed at this week meeting in Uruguay. One would ban activities used with “burley” tobacco. This kind of tabacco is grown extensively in africa and used extensively in American-style cigarettes that are popular worldwide.Antismoking groups say the proposal is aimed against the flavorings like cholocate, licorice (licorice) and sugar. The director of the Tanzania Tobacco Control Forum points out that several American brands still use burley tobacco but without additives.
But economists at NKC, a South African research group, say the guildlines would affect the lives of millions of Africans who depend on tobacco farming. The report says nearly four million people in Mozabique , Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe would be most seriouly affected.
Since June, the United States has banned cigarette companies from using misleading terms like “light” and “mild” and “low tar (tar) .
Last week, Federal health officials announced new actions to control tobacco. These include proposals to require larger health warnings on cigarette packages and advertisements.
Officials also want to require new “graphic health warnings” within two years.Proposals include a picture of a woman blowing smoke in a baby face, and an image of diseased lungs next to healthy lungs.

In North America, approximately 75% of all oral cancers are associated with tobacco use and alcohol consumption. At least 80% of oral cancer patients are smokers, and oral cancer patients who continue smoking after treatment are much more likely to developanotherhead or neck cancer. Tobacco use is also linked to other types of oral health problems, ranging from serious (increased risk of periodontal disease) to social (bad breath) including: Gingivitis
Periodontal disease
Increased severity of periodontal disease
Gum recession
Sticky tar deposits on teeth
Brown staining on teeth
“Smoker palate” (a red inflammation on the roof of the mouth)
Delayed wound healing
Tooth decay (possibly a secondary effect due to large amounts of sugar in smokeless products or less frequent dental check- ups)
Tooth abrasion (possibly due to the sand and grit in processed tobacco; also seen in pipe smokers, from clenching the pipe between teeth)
Diminished blood flow to oral area
Candidasis
Sinusitis
Altered taste
Bad breath
Black hairy tongue oral lesions
Precancerous changes in soft tissue
Tobacco use is also related to many other problems, Types of Tobacco. including cancers of the larynx, esophagus, pancreas and bladder, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis and other respiratory diseases, gastric ulcers, low birth weight babies and spontaneous abortions. All tobacco products, cigarettes, smokeless / spit tobacco, cigars, and pipes, are associated with oral cancer.
Logic alone indicates that tobacco use has effects on teeth, gums, tissues and bones. Cigarettes and other types of tobacco products contain many irritants, toxins, and carcinogens. Pipe and cigar tobacco contain sulfur. More than one-fifth of the content of some brands of smokeless tobacco is sugar. Smokeless tobacco also contains over 2,000 chemicals, many of which have been directly related to causing cancer. The most significant preventive measure used to prevent the health problems caused by tobacco use is to stop using tobacco products. The risk of developing oral cancer drops rapidly when a smoker ceases tobacco use. After ten years of not using tobacco, an ex-smoker/user risk of oral cancers is about the same as that for someone who has never smoked. To stop smoking, or using tobacco products, is much more easily said than done. The nicotine found in substantial amounts in tobacco products is widely considered to be a powerfully addicting drug. But it important to remember that, while it will be difficult, ceasing to use tobacco has immediate health benefits, including increased life expectancy and reduced risk of tobacco related diseases and conditions. @ 2007 Avis Ward of AWard Consulting, LLC
